Tribue to Biba Inspiration | Exhibition by Emanuela Di Filippo Hosted by Devonport Guildhall

Tribute to Biba Inspiration is a small selection of Di Filippo’s artistic research based on the fusion of art and fashion and inspired by the Biba fashion label of the 60’s. Emanuela has held seven exhibitions in UK and has participated in more than ten collective exhibitions in Italy and one Art Fair in USA.

For this exhibition; Di Filippo has chosen a few examples of oil pastels recently exhibited at The Other Art Fair in Chicago, representing the latest research in terms of colours and patterns.

In addition to the illustrations; a hand-painted collection of Cotton Tote bags will be exhibited, which are part of an artistic project linked to fashion accessories. Emanuela’s solo Art Show coincides with a collective exhibition “Collected and Conserved” in progress from May 4 to September 21 2019 at the Norwood Gallery, Worthing Museum and Art Gallery.

Check out this exhibition in the Cells during Column Bakehouse opening hours:

“ In Spring 2017, we hosted an exhibitions of fashion illustrations by Italian artist Emanuela Di Filippo whose work is inspired by the distinctive designs of the Biba fashion label. Her oil pastel on paper illustrations are a tribute to the original designs of Biba founder Barbara Hulanicki, who studied at Art Brighton Art College (now the University of Brighton Faculty of Arts) in the 1950s.

Emanuela used a range of Biba clothes and fashion accessories from the WMA collection as a visual inspiration for a series of a new drawings, and both the drawings and the items of collection which inspired them were displayed together in the studio gallery.

We are grateful to Emanuela for gifting one of the key works from that exhibitions, Biba in the Studio I (2017), which was the poster image for the exhibition.”

“Pitti Uomo is to men’s fashion what Cannes and the Venice Film Festival are to cinema.”

“The event will host its 96th edition from June 11 to 14 in Florence, Italy, with a packed programme that will feature both special events and big names in fashion. It will be a very special celebration for the trade show’s 30th birthday. “

I am happy that in my country some luxury fashion brands are still gathering after 30 years, for this occasion in Florence Armani, Givenchy, Ferragamo, Prada, Karl Lagerfeld, Carine Roitfeld, Marco de Vincenzo, MSGM will participate ...

"This season's Pitti Uomo is dedicated to collections for spring / summer 2020 and will take place at the Fortezza Da Basso with a total of 1,220 participating brands"

A tribute to the inspiration that these Italian historic fashion events give to me, a lesson to grow, learn and compete.

Fashion Style in Chicago The Other Art Fair Weekend May 2019

I was honoured to have my first exhibition in Chicago, USA. Thanks to The Other Art Fair I felt independent to show my artworks in United States and networking with other artist, receive feedback of my work, understand better my niche of art collectors and open up opportunity to the American Art Market.

Chicago it looks a city sensitive to contemporary art and experimentations, “despite can’t compete with NY amenities and galleries … is trying to have a “middle class market”, warehouse space make it an ideal place for a studio while the lower cost of living frees up money for artistic pursuit. Chicago’s art community is open to experimentation.”

Style in Chicago is different than other cities … “while New York is a Fashion capital in USA and Los Angeles has became the fashion destination … Chicago receives less love from the industry, Chicagoans have a practical side to the way they dress … since Chicago is located in the midwest it brings about a lot of different style and cultures.”

At the Chicago History Museum’s new exhibition “Silver Screen to Mainstream: American Fashion in the 1930s and ‘40S’ showcase 30 pieces from the Museum’s permanent collection, the display clothing illustrates how Hollywood replaced Paris as a fashion trends during the years between the Wall Street crash and Second World War . “The european clothes are very much more about the designer than the wearer, whereas American clothes are much more about the wearer than the designer. It is much more about the confort and the movability - then being comfortable and beautiful and elegant”.

Emanuela Di Filippo - The Other Art Fair Chicago Presented by Saatchi Art 16 May 2019 – 19 May 2019

Art & Fashion, consists of a series of Biba Vintage new and old originals taken from Emanuela Di Filippo's Biba oil pastels. She has held six solo exhibitions in UK and has participated in more than ten collective exhibitions and art fairs in Italy. For her first exhibition in USA at The Other Art Fair Chicago May 2019 she has selected a series of pastels on paper of different sizes that will be displayed on a 16 linear ft booth inside the Mana Contemporary space. It is a brief colourful summary of her artistic research but above all a tribute to Biba, an English fashion icon from the 60s.
